in a wink of an eye

The sun was coming up when Ellie lifted her head from the futon. She wasn't home. She wasn't sure where she was. An old clock somewhere in the house rang in that it was five in the morning, she supposed. She felt as if gravity had sucked her to this very spot, and she could hardly move. She was in Kyle's room.

She jerked herself up. Nothing gone. She was still in one piece. Except for the shoes that were on the floor. She remembered being very sleepy and they'd gone to his room to talk about her night out at the cookout and how she might have to see a doctor because she might have had a seizure in the back of that pickup truck.

"Maybe it was motion sickness. You were cold. Possibly, you just fainted, sort of." That had been his explanation. It sounded like a good one. She didn't tell him about her Dad though and how she didn't want to be alone with him. Instead, she got mesmerized by all the cans of energy drinks in his room. Some were empty, but a lot of them were full, too.

"Is this all you live on?" It just didn't seem right.

"Pretty much."

She grabbed one of the drinks now and opened it. Drank the sugary junk as fast as she could. She needed to get out of here. How could she have gone to sleep like that?

She knew she hadn't wanted to go home, and there was no one to stop her. Her Dad hadn't even thought of her.

"I gotta go," she shook Kyle awake who was sleeping next to her. "When does your Mom get home?"

"A little after six, usually." He murmured.

"Usually?" She needed something to put her hair up in, but she really didn't even want to look at herself. "Then I gotta go."

"Well, nothing happened." He rose up on his elbows.

"I know," she leaned over then and gave him a kiss on the cheek, hoping that wasn't a mistake. "You're the best." She meant dinner actually, the company too. She bit her bottom lip then smiled with a wink which was pretty peculiar. She didn't even know she knew how to wink.

She didn't want to think about the wink, or even sleeping here. She had to get home before anyone found out.
