Ellie didn't run like a sprinter until after the cops made sure they didn't have any alcohol in their drinks. They were called away soon because someone had fallen into the river. It felt like a bad omen to Ellie. She didn't even tell Cory she was leaving.
"Wait." She heard her him call from behind her, but he didn't run after her, either.
She just couldn't stop herself. It felt as if she was freeing herself as the evening grew into a dark twilight. She ran all the way home. Alone.
When she got there, she noticed Dad was home only it was dark inside, and she ran upstairs to Lisa's room, but she wasn't there. Her bed was empty. It was as if she hadn't been there for days.
Ellie felt her heartbeat pumping through her as she took a breath, thinking, what had her sister done. Had she just left without telling them? Ellie felt a bit numb thinking her sister might be gone for good. It couldn't be. She couldn't have.
She ran back downstairs and found her Dad in the den in his favorite recliner with his back turned to her. There was the smell of something not quite right. She couldn't remember the last time she'd smelled something so disgusting. Maybe New Years eve. It was alcohol. The glass next to him by the lamp might have looked of water, but it wasn't.
She shook her head, no. Didn't even bother to say a word to him. She couldn't be here alone with him. Ellie spun around and left. There was only one place to go.
