"What gives?" Ellie asked later when she and Eric were taking a walk after dark while the fireflies blinked about. She so wanted to forget about dinner. It could have been the perfect night.
"What?" He shrugged putting his arm around her. "Everything went fine."
"It was odd."
"It wasn't that odd."
"It is when Kyle takes over," Ellie squinted.
"He's a funny guy."
"It was funny all right, but not that kind of funny." She poked her finger into his chest then.
"Ow," He stopped then. "If you have to know, I paid him off."
"You what?" She was a bit angry now. "You gave him money?"
"No, we just have this understanding. " He shrugged. "And I gave him my electric guitar for the next three weeks. You know, sort of to insure he'd behave himself, and be on my side."
"You shouldn't have." She stifled a laugh.
"But we are friends, you know." He hugged her closer. "He might not like that we're seeing each other, and it might be hard for him to deal, but we still talk. It might be a little different, but I think he's coming around."
"Coming around? I don't know about this, Eric," she sighed. "You believe him?"
"Yeah, I do." He leaned in then and kissed her.
"You think my Mom likes you?" Ellie asked.
"Honestly, I don't care what she thinks." He shrugged. "As long as we can be mutual, what more can you ask for?"
Ellie didn't say anything. But if her Mom didn't like Eric, she didn't care, either. They were at the park by then. She raced to the merry-go-around. Hopefully, Eric would know what to do. She wanted to be dizzy with him and forget all about dinner.
