"Lunch was awful. We have beans and cornbread everyday. I don't know if I can do this. All the time," Ellie told Eric on the phone a few days later. "And she keeps telling me she's gonna tell me everything about my mother."

"Sound like a big mystery," he said.

"She's crazy. I can't believe a thing she says. Says she named her cat after a bank robber." Ellie rolled her eyes.

"I'm sorry, Babe. Really, it truly shouldn't be happening to you. Stuck there, in the middle of nowhere. I hate it," Eric was saying and she knew he was pacing. She was pacing too. "Mum and I got in a row." He then mentioned.

"Really, you two talk?"

"Eventually," he said. "She found your bra in my sock drawer."

"Oh really." So thats where he kept it.

"She made a big deal out if, of course," he said. "She thinks I'm in to cross-dressing now. She took my whole room apart about the matter. Its just a mess now. Freaking on me. Saying, I'm a liar. I never heard such shit, coming from her. All those hurtful remarks. I don't think I'll ever trust her again."

"That is just weird. Now she'd start in on something like that." What would it have been like if his mother knew about all the afternoons she'd spent with him? "Anything else, going on?"

"I'm going to do some yard work at your parents with Kyle," Eric told her. "I just didn't know we were doing it so soon. A big wind storm came again, and some branches are down. Kyle insisted I help. So I guess I will."

"Good luck."

"Yeah, I'll need it most definitely. I'm not your favorite on any Mum's list, lately," Eric said. "Are you sleeping?"

"Kind of." But all her dreams were of him, far away from here. She just wished there was some magic way to get away from here. But there wasn't. "I better go. Miss you terribly, and I love you."

"Love you." He gave her a kiss over the phone then and hung up.
