Doomed. They might as well have dumped her down a well and left her. Did her Mom hate her this much? Could it get any worse?
She heard Ben on the phone in the kitchen then. She went to look. He was on a cell phone. She was shocked. A small smile formed on her lips then.
Ellie jerked her phone open and got a small text to Eric right away.
I'm here.

She shut her cell as soon as Ben offered her the phone. "Its your Mom," he nodded with an even smile.
"Hullo," Ellie swallowed the hesitation to scream at her. She wanted to, but she didn't.
"You sound tired."
"Do I?" That was a stupid question, she thought. Being on a bus for a day wasn't exactly energizing.
"Are you getting along with Ben?" Her mother's question made Ellie think she might be in for an arranged marriage with him, by the way it sounded.
"I guess so." She looked back at the kitchen. She felt sweat trickle down the small of her back.
"Well, remember, he's busy with the animal clinic in town, you can't call him all the time," she said.
"I won't." But Ellie didn't want to be here alone with Aunt Maggie who was giving her strange looks right now.
Then her mother went into detail about how she needed to help around the house and with Aunt Maggie.
"Oh, and be careful in the garden. There are rattlesnakes," her mother then said.
"Rattlesnakes?" Ellie gasped. A chill came over her, thinking of a poisonous diamond back snake.
"And scorpions, in the house, but they're only at night on the walls. The smaller they are, the worse the sting."
"Mom, why do any of you leave Aunt Maggie out here?" Ellie cringed. This was just an aggravation. She should have been in a nursing home. Not alone out in the country.
"Because she was born there and thats where she plans to die." Her mother's words sent another chill down her spine along with the trickle of sweat going down the small of her back in to her shorts.
"To die?" Ellie didn't like the sound of that. Nobody told her this before.
Her mother didn't say much more other than she loved her. Although, Ellie wasn't so sure she believed her anymore. She handed the phone back to Ben.
Aunt Maggie looked at her crazily. "You need some clothes on, girl. Can't have you naked around here."
Ellie reached for the first thing she could find. A paisley smock apron hanging in the kitchen. This would have to do. She couldn't think of anything else.
will ellie's mum come too? i'm curious to know more about aunt maggie, and ben, and everything. poor ellie. i wouldn't believe my mum either if i was ellie. ellie's mum and ben seem to get along fairly well. i agree, it sounds like ellie's mum has already arranged a marriage between ellie and ben.
ReplyDelete"Being on a bus for a day wasn't exactly energizing." that's such a funny sentence, and it's true. i always get sleepy on buses.
That's funny about "get some clothes on..." Glad whe got through to Eric.
ReplyDeleteWow-so intriguing, what will be in store for Ellie now?
ReplyDeleteOy. Sounds . . . scintillating. Yikes. I believe I'm starting to pity Ellie.
