before a dish breaks

Amanda supposed Eric just wanted them to get used to his visits before the baby came. She couldn't figure out why else he was here. It wasn't that awkward, but still she had a feeling he really enjoyed having someone to listen to him.

He gave her a movie theater gift card.

"Somebody gave me this at work, and I don't see me going to a movie anytime soon, maybe you and Elliot would like-"

"Oh, sure. Thanks." She looked at him with a small smile, and then put the gift card away.

"I dunno if Syd ..is..you know.."

She looked at him blankly since he had interrupted her in the middle of washing dishes. He started washing the dishes even if the water was too hot for him. He gritted just a little but went to scrubbing pots and pans that she never got to last night.

"I think she hates me." He sighed.

"Sorry." She dried a dish then.

"I wish I knew what I did." He said so quietly.

"Maybe you need to just fly up there and ask her since evidently, she's not talking to you on the phone." She guessed.

"I couldn't. Really, you know," he shrugged. "You see, I was moving too fast. I guess. Well, we were. I mean, it wasn't completely my fault. I guess." He squinted.

"It might not have been your fault." She knew about them sleeping together. She had to wonder if he'd tell this to just anyone. She could imagine someone begging him for money out on the street, and Eric asking what they thought about his ordeal with Syd.

"I know. I know. I feel awful about this. I do. I just...." He stared at her then. "God, you think its some sort of addiction, don't you?" He gave her a small wince.

"No, no, I didn't say that."

He rinsed a dish.

"You need a hobby." She told him.

"Like what?" He frowned.

"Just stop thinking about Syd so much." Amanda sighed.

"I can't help it," He pressed his lips together. "I can't let her get away. I just can't."

"Then its settled, you'll do something about it. You'll go see her, and if, you know, it doesn't happen, then you have to get over her, Eric. You have to move on."

Eric nodded.

"You're right. I should. I have too." He washed another dish then as if he knew exactly what he had to do.
