easy does it

Liz guessed she passed the test with Kip's mother. She'd been there for her birthday. She brought her a present. Of course, the questioned remained. "When are you guys going to start a family?"

"Is she serious?" Liz couldn't believe his mother asked such questions.

"She's just a Mom." Kip looked as her as if Liz was the silly one. "That's what mothers do."

Liz gave him a scowl. She wasn't sure if she were mother material.

"Look, I'm not saying it has to happen tomorrow." After all, they were on a vacation in the 1,000 Island together that took them on a roadtrip all the way to Martha's Vineyard. Kip definitely wanted to take a trip. And she guessed it was good for them to get in the car and go somewhere.

She was thankful he wasn't putting her on the spot to be an egg donor on this occasion.

"Its just, it would be nice. If it does happen. One day." He told her. She wanted to understand that. But this was what they needed. Trips and adventures. Wasn't that what the journey was all about? "I mean, it would be great if you know, we could just be together as a family."

"Well, I never liked my family." She told him while she was looking up from a map. They were doing this the old fashioned way. Nothing electronic was navigating them.

"What was so awful about it?" Kip looked at her as if he wanted answers.

"I dunno." She shrugged. "Maybe it was me. But it was like my parents were trying to be a Disney movie, you know, and we were never quite like that. Dad always never knew what he wanted to do. Acting like we weren't there half the time. He was depressed. And Mom kept acting like everything was great. When you knew it wasn't. I don't know why she even stayed with him. And now that we're gone, its like they just can't get enough of each other."

"Well, maybe you just see things differently now than you did then." Kip told her.

"My dad was pretty spacey. In his own little world. He was this artist. I don't know why-" She shook her head thinking how he'd painted a mural on the back side of the house. Hoping someone from the freeway would see his work. It was a huge penis. She remembered her Mom saying, "Honey, couldn't you make this into a flower or something?" All along her father smoked cigarettes and drank beer until he finally told her. "You can't defect perfection." That was the kind of stuff she had to live with. Maybe that's why she kept Kip from her parents. She knew how they were. What if her Dad let it slip now, how weird he used to be.

"I could see about moving in with you," Kip nodded.

Liz almost rolled the map in a ball. She would hate for him to know the lengths she went too, to keep him away from Syd, all this time.
