just another night at the library

The secretary left Ian a huge chunk of chocolate cake from the volunteer party. He wasn't sure he even needed it. As it was, he was pretty cavity prone and did his best to stay away from sweets.

"Do you want it?" He asked Kayla.

"Oh, I shouldn't." She was busy at the desk making phone calls to patrons. Ian was about to toss it. "No, wait, I'll take it."

He put the plastic wrapped cake next to her then as she looked up to see the young adult librarian at the counter flirting with someone.

"God, why does he do this?" She was angry.

"Rick?" Ian looked at her.

"I can't stand him." she swelled a frown.

"Why? If you don't mind me asking." Ian winced.

"Why? Because he's an asshole. That's why." She looked at him, sternly. Ian guessed he shouldn't have asked. He moved on to a new cart of books to put away. "Wait." She looked back at him. "You doing anything after work?"

Ian shook his head, no.

"You want to do something?" She asked.

Ian tried to stay even lipped, but a rush of happiness washed over him. "I guess." He sucked in a breath then, knowing this was nothing. Nothing. They would be doing nothing.

"Are you serious?" Ian couldn't believe he was doing this with Kayla. Ice cream? Just what sort of person was she?

They sat at the diner across from each other in a booth. She looked a tad miserable. She never wore anything really nice anymore. It finally hit him that she was depressed, and he'd just now noticed. He guessed he could dig into the ice cream. He hoped he wouldn't regret it.

"Is everything OK?" He looked at her.

She nodded as she played with her ice cream.

"Come on, tell me. You can tell me anything. OK?" He didn't want to see her so sad.

"I can't find a real job." She finally told him. "I hate this part-time crap."

Until now, he'd thought she was full-time.

"I graduated college over a year ago and I need to start graduate school, or something. I still live at home." She confessed.

Ian just nodded.

"I used to go out with that stupid Rick guy. I thought we were friends." She sighed.

"Were you?"

"No, I did not sleep with him." She looked at him then. "He wanted me too. I am so glad I didn't. I can't stand him. I don't think I know how to date, anymore. Really. I mean, I was so focused on school and- and, now its like its too late."

"I highly doubt that." Ian smiled. He was getting it now. She had no idea how to even get back into the dating pool.
