feeling like an old friend

"Is there anything you want to tell me?" Kyle was still in shock that Amanda got a car that new. "I can't believe you got that on a trade in from your beat up car."

"I didn't." Amanda was even lipped as if she didn't want to tell him any secrets. "It was Elliot's LTD."

"What?" Kyle winced hard. He was in her kitchen with Rosie in his lap, drawing him a picture. Of course, Rosie wanted his full attention, but he had to pay attention to what was going on here. "How? How did you get him...too..."

"Oh, its-its fine." But she wouldn't look at him when she talked to him. She was busy cutting a chunk of gooey brownie for him and a glass a milk.

"Its fine?" He kept eying her hoping she'd tell him the truth.

"Look, I'm going to wake up one day, and-and he'll just be gone. Then what?" She put down the plate in front of him.

"That's why you need to get legally separated, right now. File for a divorce." He told her, but she looked as if she might pass out when she sat there at the kitchen table.

She sighed.

"Are you really, all right?" He thought he'd know by now if she were pregnant, but he might have been wrong. He hoped she wasn't. "Look, you have the next two months with student teaching. You can do this."

She nodded. She told him Asa told her the same thing, but she put her elbows on the table and smoothed her fingertips over her forehead. She looked as if she were ready to rip her auburn hair out. "I'm such a failure," she broke down.

"Don't say that." Kyle said and Rosie mimicked his words. He gave Rosie his brownie and let her sit in his seat to eat. "You've come this far. You have to see this through." He knew she'd worked plenty of long hours getting college credits even when she was pregnant with Rosie. Where had that determination gone?

But as he watched her, he wondered if she was talking about something else.
