the mystery man

"So, what do you think?" Lisa jumped in right away when her mother went to the bathroom, and her guest was in the kitchen making coffee.

"Well, she looks good." Ellie felt naked without a baby to hold or someone hanging on to her. They'd gone to their Mom's with out the kids.

"NO." Lisa furrowed her brow. "You know, him?"

"Him?" Ellie wanted to leave that blank since he did have name, Blake.

"How old do you think he is?" Lisa whispered to Ellie

Ellie didn't know for sure. The guy could have been twenty or thenty-five. She shrugged. And there Blake was with cookies and coffee.

They both quickly said their thank yous and started the coffee break, Ellie guessed.

"So how do you like Nebraska?" Ellie thought that might give her an idea about him.

"The cold doesn't bother me." He shrugged. "I lived in Sioux City most of my life."

"Did you?" Now Lisa was going to jump in on the mystery. "You still have family there?"

"My grandfather is still on a reservation, near there." He told them.

Ellie, just smiled..well, he was part Native American. Her Mom was living with a Native American. That sounded, kind of exciting.  Then she remembered Lisa saying he was homeless. How did Lisa know that? Was she just assuming?

"So..so where did you meet my Mom?" Ellie felt she should ask.

"Down at the shelter." He nodded. His thick dark hair came around his face. He didn't look like someone she'd just picked up off the street. He was in jeans and a long sleeved gray thermal shirt. His workboots looked like they'd been through a lot. But he was lean and looked as if he were up to helping anyone.

"Huh." God, she  hoped her mom hadn't picked him up like some stray puppy. Now Ellie looked at her sister, who looked at her.

"You know, your Mom helps out with five of the surrounding homeless shelters for teens." He informed him.

Ellie was shocked. She had no idea her mom was doing anything like that. She looked a Lisa. Ellie knew they shouldn't be judging their mother.
