To the future

"Why would you stay?" Sam asked Elliot.

He'd at least gotten Elliot to take a drive with him to look at some houses in the country. The snow was just in bits now. More ice than anything else. Supposedly, it was warm now, but there was still a stiff cold breeze from the north. Sam was glad he wasn't cleaned shaven. He needed every bit of his whiskers to keep him warm.

"She's made her choice, man. Baby or no baby, just get the hell out of there, L." Sam couldn't help but gripe about it. Elliot wasn't going to.

"Did we cross the bridge?" Elliot acted as if they were lost.

"No, we did not cross the bridge." His truck vroomed on, down a country road. They'd criss-crossed plenty of fields. True, they were in the country and those hills were awful close that they called a mountain range.

"We are in Iowa." Elliot looked at him. They'd made it to Dr. John's the pron outlet.

"Oh." Sam slowed down. He guessed that was the bridge he saw in the distance. "You want to go in?"

"No." Elliot gave him a horrified look. "I'm a teacher, for god's sakes. Besides, I can't afford any of that crap on my salary."

"I remember how I wanted to be security guard at the door when I was in high school. I thought, you'd have to go to police school or something like that." Sam couldn't help but laugh. He made a donut turn in the parking lot. He guessed they better look in Nebraska for houses not Iowa.

"Look," Sam started back. "Even if you live there in that house with Amanda and what's his face, does not guarantee you'll be there for the birth of your baby."

Elliot looked pale then as if he'd said the wrong thing.

"Won't they need your room for a nursery, anyway?" Sam asked as he drove past the sign that  read THE GOOD LIFE.

Elliot couldn't speak.

Sam kept driving. Finally, he found the road not to far from the river. This was the one he was interested in. It was one they could flip, and it was a foreclosure.
