on the road back

"Is something wrong?" Derrick had put off asking Ian about it, but that phone call really ruined the camping trip.

"No, of course not." Ian looked as if a dire headache was slowly killing him.

"Who called?" Derrick knew he should have asked as soon as Ian got off his cell, but the rain was blasting down, and they had to hurry to get everything in the car. Also, he didn't want to sound too klingy. As it was, he'd gotten several texts was Josie about her boring stay with her Dad in Rapid City. She wasn't even excited about Mount Rushmore nor the Black Hills.

Naturally, he'd fussed with her, how she should be texting Neal and not him. Honestly, he wasn't eager to get back and console his friend, Neal.. about the Josie matter. He hoped Neal had moved on, but he doubted it. Seriously, he felt like their referee, half the time.

"It was nobody." Ian first said. They'd gotten situated on their drive. Derrick wanted Ian to be in a better mood before they found a room.

"I don't think so. Amy didn't give you any trouble, did she?" Immediately, he wondered what she'd said to him. What if she had a kid? His kid? He knew he was worrying about nothing, but still. He hoped this wasn't about Ian's ex.

"No, just..just Jules." Ian didn't sound happy about it.

"Jules?" Derrick couldn't figure out if that was a guy or a girl.

"Remember...that girl I told you who was gonna have a baby, back..back home?" Ian finally looked over at Derrick for a second as they were coming in to a little town where there were a couple motels just off the interstate.

"I guess." He wasn't sure he was listening that time he mentioned her.

"Collette had her baby. Jules' baby." Ian told him.

"Huh. Well, at least-" Derrick didn't know what he was going to stay. "What's so bad about that?"

"Jules is ...a wanker." Ian said it so degrading, but still Derrick thought it sounded so funny.

"OK." Derrick wasn't sure what else to say.

"He's a dad." Ian fretted then. "The worst of all possibilities. Jules..being a Dad." Ian parked the car. "Its just..I would make a much better Dad, than he ever would."

Derrick stared at Ian then. "But you..you don't want to be a Dad, right now? Right?" Now Derrick winced hard. "We'll have kids one day. Just..when we're ready." Derrick almost winked. "By that time, we'll both be great Dads." Derrick was gonna find a way to take Ian's mind off this old friend of his Jules. But Derrick was beginning to wonder just how much Ian disliked Jules.
