a sure thing

Penelope couldn't deny it. She was crushed when she found out Elliot was going to be a Dad. She stood there speechless for the longest while, staring at Amanda, when she found out his situation. It was obvious this a new beginning of some kind not an ending.

But there was Asa, she thought of his grin. How he shook her hand, like welcoming her to the family. He treated as if she were already Elliot's girlfriend. Perhaps that's why she withdrew her hand so quickly. As it was, she never shook anyone's hand.

How could she...

Well, Penelope rolled over and hugged her pillow in bed. She belonged here even if the sun poured in all around her at home. Away from the crowd. It was good to find her peace, again. There was nothing to be bothered with. No dilemma to worry about. She was never going to have a baby.

Still. It bothered her that she wouldn't even know how to kiss Elliot, anyway. She'd decided this long ago. No one. Just her. She didn't even like to be touched. She sucked in a breath.

Penelope liked to believe that bad thing, back at basic training in the Army, had happened to some other girl. Not her. She couldn't bare to let anyone know. Her heart was so harden. Not even someone with a sunny disposition like Elliot's could change that.

Yes, this was what she was doing on her two weeks off. Staying in bed, being sad. Completely lonely. Not even remembering to eat.

Her cell rang. She was sure it was Olivia wanting her to do something. Olivia's real dad would be here soon, and Olivia was expecting her to be there for a family dinner. She reached for it.

"Hello." Penelope barely said.

"Hey, I.." It was Elliot and he didn't sound so sure why he called. "Well, you know, I guess you wouldn't be interested....but I was thinking..maybe..." There was a pause. She wanted to hang up, but she didn't. "OK, we don't even have to go out, but could I..you know, just call you, sometime?"

"Like now?" She almost smiled.

"Yeah, like now. I mean, if there is a good time?" He told her he didn't text. Something about driving and texting. He was afraid if he started, he'd text while driving.

"How about, nine, at night?" She guessed she could make a little time for him. It would be better this way. He just didn't need to know why.
