the beginning or near the end
Josie was a heat of emotions. No one came to check on her. She grabbed her cell, thought about calling Topher. It wasn't exactly working out with him. She guessed. Finally she dialed Derrick.
"Hey, are, you, all right?" Were his first words. But she said nothing. An avalanche of tears bombarded her. She chocked for a breath.
"No." She finally told him. "I-I don't know ..how..how..I can do this?" Josie hugged her stomach. Nothing moved, as she expected. It startled her as some sort of warning. She'd never really took those little nudges as much of anything. Just a figment of her imagination. But now, it was suddenly important. As if the baby shut down too, it was over. She felt herself panicking. What if something was wrong? "I might need to go to the emergency room."
"What?" Now Derrick's voice was frantic.
"Just..just to be for sure, if..if I'm..If the baby is OK." She finally managed to say. She grabbed her car keys. "I'll meet you at the emergency room."
"Wait, let me pick you up!" Derrick blurted.
"No. Don't. I don't want..my Dad..." She winced more tears as if the thought of her Dad seeing Derrick would be bad news. "I'll be fine."
"But- At least let Asa drive you! Please!" Derrick begged.
"I'll be fine." She sniffed more tears. Her head felt as if she was on the brink of a sinus infection.
"No, we... are going to help you. It'll be fine. OK?" Derrick told her to wait.
But she had to think of the baby. She had to stop thinking of herself, even if she was told she couldn't be responsible for it.
