at the end of the rope

Topher was sure it was too late. Late for a lot of things, lately.

He still had Audrey to contend with. Just when he thought he got rid of her, he was right back where he started.

Sure, he thought he might be helping her. There were good intentions. He thought he might be a good influence. Instead, she was a very bad influence.

Life was such a party. And granted she could go from oh so serious, to laughing at every little thing that happened. She was a different girl on drugs. And he didn't know what to do about it.

Wasn't like he could call someone and have them haul her off to the Animal Human society. She was not a cat. Although, she'd licked various parts of him that perhaps should remain unnamed.

It was ridiculous, yet he couldn't help but admit he missed her, sort of.

Once upon a time she'd been his good friend Freddie's girlfriend. That was when Topher was still in high school, when he was innocent of everything. Until Freddie went to Dallas one weekend. Audrey swore Freddie left her for a stripper and one thing lead to another. Eventually, it might have been more than a hookup.

Yes, he was in love with her. Was. Topher had to remember. He'd so planned to tell her then, but she laughed at him, so he never said it, again. And it was hard for him to tell if she was on something or if maybe they really were having a moment.

Of course, he remembered Willow's wise words. "You can't count on Audrey for anything!" Willow said it over and over. Topher felt sure now, Audrey was the main reason why Willow would never think of him anymore than just a friend.

"At least there's no chance she'd ever get pregnant." Topher thought that was a plus as he explained this over the phone to Willow. "She gets those shots, once or twice a year. Something like that.."

"Yes, but you could still get STDs, that is no laughing matter." Willow reminded him. She told about her trip with Jules. They were going to England. "Don't even bother coming in." She told him his hands were full with Audrey.

It felt like a vacation at least from work. There was still the band to worry about. Henry was no help. Topher still needed a drummer.

Why did everything have to be a mess with Audrey? Was he just a bad influence or what? At least his Mom was still paying for his little studio, but he didn't know how long that would last. He hoped he didn't have to move in with his grandmother.
