maybe so

sisters

Audrey couldn't decide if she was sick with worry or just mad at Henry.

It was impossible to work, but she tried. Somehow she felt so hollow inside, thinking she should have done something to stop Henry from any of this nonsense.

"Your Mom.." Kayla cleared her throat, about to change her words, but she didn't. "She lost a lot weight when..when, we didn't know where you were or what you were doing." Kayla gave her a dead stare.

Audrey stewed in her chair and tried to edit a file she was working on.

"I get it. I know..." She sighed as she looked up at Kayla. "I hurt a lot of people. And I hurt myself the most and didn't even know it." She winced, wondering if Henry even knew what he was doing. "I want to know when..when we exactly lost him, you know."

"Well..what made you..." Kayla shrugged. She looked more nerdy than usual in her bookish glasses.

Funny, Audrey was taking Kayla's cue to dress more like her. Perhaps they should raid each other's closets.

"What made you decide you had to be on drugs?" Kayla asked.

"I dunno. I was feeling I needed to, you know, join in, or something, at a party. And these people.. were really friendly. Lot more fun than the people I knew." Audrey couldn't justify anything if she even spilled her guts to Kayla about her past. It would do no good. It wasn't like it would bring her any closer to Henry, either.

"I thought he'd tell me, you know. Whatever..was on his mind, but he didn't. He was so, quiet lately." Audrey wished she'd looked at the signs a little harder. "He drank our wine." That must have been a sign. "I'm not sure why? Did something bad happen? I dunno about?"

"I don't think you'll ever know." Kayla waved her baggie of selected teabags. "We need a break. Lets have tea."

Audrey followed her back to the breakroom. She didn't feel like having a tea party, but maybe some tea would do her some good. It was nice to talk to Kayla, again. Maybe they could be friends. Real friends.
