"I'm so excited for her?" Camille was being generous with her smiles lately. She was happy to hear that Vada was moving in with Henry and his parents. She listened to Dean talk about Vada and what she'd been through, and all she'd overcome.
A part of her wished she could adopt Dean, but there were so many things to worry about at the moment, like her due date was any day. Although, she was scheduled to go in for surgery since she was high risk, evidently for her age.
"I bet you'll miss her," Camille said as if it was best to stick with a Vada topic, and not slip into the thoughts that Duncan was not the marrying sort. Evidently.
Sure, they ate meals together and watched TV, too, but it was different, lately. He was her friend, but she wanted him more than he evidently wanted her. A part of her felt she'd never grow up, but she couldn't ask him, "What did I do that was so wrong?"
"I'll see her at school." Dean shrugged.
Camille tried to act numb, but she sank into moody tears instead and Dean went to get Josie. After all, he'd put away all the food that he'd brought home from the grocery store.
While he was gone, the back door opened and there was Duncan with sunflowers. He held out a little box. Suddenly, Camille was laughing.
"I've been thinking about this an awful lot." Duncan shrugged. "I want to marry you. I do. But, I have so much baggage."
"Not any more, than anyone else." She shook her head. She opened the box. It was the simplest of rings with a little pink diamond. She smiled all over.
"I should have done it sooner." He looked kind of sad that he hadn't. But she hugged him, anyway.
