Kind of a Hunch

"You're going to be so great tonight," Luna smiled with enthusiasm as she smoothed down Vada's shoulders. She could tell Vada had the jitters, but she knew her nervousness wouldn't last long once she got on stage.

Vada gritted a grin and went to her spot, ready to go on stage.

Luna looked back at Essie still in the dressing room, who looked as if she might have the worst headache.

"Are you, OK?" Luna asked just as the show started. She'd been through this production for so long now she knew in 10 minutes the room would be crowded with clothing changes.

Essie only nodded, but she didn't look happy.

"What's going on?" Luna sighed as she went to Essie who was counting the vintage outfits as if they weren't in order when Luna knew they were.

"I'm fine." Essie shrugged, yet she looked as if she was on the verge of tears.

"You, can tell me, you know." Luna looked at her as if she knew Essie could use a friend.

"I shouldn't be talking to you ..about any of this." Essie winced as she hugged herself.

"Why?" Luna  squinted. What had gone wrong? Now. "Are you, OK? Did anything happened?" Then as she asked the question, she remembered. Essie went to the Valentine's day dance with Holden. Only they never showed up. "Is this about Holden?" Immediately, Luna thought Holden had done something to Essie. Something awful, perhaps. "Oh..God..did he.." She didn't want to think it. What if there was something off about him? He was different now. After the accident. He was so quiet. And he never came out of his room. Maybe he was mad, after all.

"No..no..its me." Essie, shook her head.

"Don't say that." Luna didn't want to make Essie uncomfortable, but she wanted to know. "Is..is he weird?" She then asked.

Essie shook her head, no.

"He got on at the new grocery store." Luna then said of her step-brother. "I guess..that's working out." She didn't see him much, lately.

"That's probably a good thing." Essie then nodded. "I'm..I'm just not sure we're good for each other."

"Oh." Luna still wasn't sure if she understood, but she knew Essie was unhappy. Maybe just with herself.

  1. It's hard to just open up to people, but I am glad that Luna is trying to talk to her.

  2. At least I think Essie is on the right track.
