What's a sister for?

What's a sister for?

"I just don't know what to do." Eli couldn't even help Lena with the dishes. He was so down and out. He hated the place he'd found with Deiter. It was no bigger than a motel room and the walls were thin. They could hear everything around them. Eli hadn't had the best of luck of keeping a job, either.

"Try to find something that makes, you happy." She thought he liked  selling cell phones, but obviously, people didn't need new cell phones, all the time.

"I can't think of a thing." He shook his head.

He was such a little boy. Oh, she hoped she never had one, like him. She couldn't say if it was all his fault. Maybe he was babied when he was younger by all those sisters. Of course, she'd never met a one of them. They never came to see him. Possibly, they couldn't stand him either, but she was sure they'd hindered him, somehow.

"That's what the guidance counselors are for, on campus. You, should meet with them." She told him.

He looked at her as if he hated the idea.

"Deiter is still working, right?" Lena didn't constantly keep in contact with them. She would invite Eli over about once a month. For a while, she thought her half-brother only needed her for the laundry, but she'd stopped that.

Eli only nodded with his hands crammed into his kakis' pockets.

"And you two, are doing OK?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't we be?" Eli stared at her. "Is everything OK with Tony? And that kid sister of his?"

He hadn't exactly hit it off with Angie, but then Angie couldn't stand Deiter.

"We, are OK. Thanks for asking." She felt as if she needed to phrase things in a way where maybe Eli would imitate her, to overcome his bluntness. She guessed she needed to see him everyday.

"I wish people liked me." Eli said out of the blue.

Lena couldn't help but smile. At least he noticed. She was beginning to wonder if he was oblivious to that fact.

  1. It must be confusing. Its hard to say if he's been babied all his life..or if he's just an odd guy..but I love him, anyway.
