a late winter's tale

A late Winter's Tale

Audrey didn't go to the family dinner with Aidan. After all, she was pretty sure it was all her fault about Oliver splitting with the baby. She didn't think he'd have the guts to do it.

Kayla was definitely hysterical. Her mom was still consoling her. It wasn't the end of the world? Was it?

Her mom talked to Oliver. Yes, he was with his little brother and wife somewhere near Bristol. And he sounded as if it were a family affair.

Audrey sighed. Was that really true?

Kayla was too emotional to talk to him which really infuriated Audrey. Kayla laid in bed with one arm over her eyes. Yes, she was making herself sick.

Audrey hugged herself as she watched.

Her Mom went to make another pot of tea. This time, their Mom really wanted Kayla to try to have some yogurt.

Naturally, Kayla blurted that she didn't do dairy anymore.

Audrey rolled her eyes.

"Can, you just look at what you've done?" Audrey gritted.

"What?" Kayla could barely get out without choking. Her asthma was acting up. Of course, she looked washed out, as she rose up on her elbows. No way, would that Garvin guy find her attractive now. Besides, what kind of name was Garvin?

She closed her eyes and another storm of tears came.

"You, were making Oliver miserable." Audrey clarified as if Kayla didn't know. "Did you ever love him?"

"Yes." She blurted. "I dunno. I thought so." Her face swelled with grief. "He was a very good letter writer." She breathed.

Audrey nodded. She wasn't sure if she'd ever get what really made her sister tick. She sat down on the edge of the bed, thinking of words from a strange conversation she'd heard on Downton Abbey not so long ago. She imagined herself thinking that way about Aidan, all proper like an English lord. She couldn't help but laugh on the inside.

She'd always loved how Aidan was around her and even other people. It was as if he really knew how to listen. And she so loved his conversations.

"Well, if Oliver filled your brain up once, he can do it again." Audrey looked at Kayla out of the corner of her eye.

Kayla only squinted as if that wasn't much of a comfort.

Audrey couldn't help but to be on Oliver's side. She didn't want to say it, but if Oliver took his time to stay away..Audrey wasn't going to hold it against him.
