Don't suppose

Don't suppose

"How did you even know I'd be here?" Maggie still couldn't stop smiling. Rhys Crider was the last person she ever thought she'd see again. And he showed up the last hour of work.

But here she was smiling so hard, she was afraid her face might hurt. After all, they never saw eye to eye on anything.

"What are you doing here?"

"I just had some time to kill and well..you know..I have a few contacts around." He shrugged as if it wasn't that big of a deal.

"Right. They just didn't have time to see you..and you knew...Maggie has all the time in the world." She sighed, wondering..were they really old friends?

Yes, they'd been on a mission trip together, but that was ages ago, and he had moved on. After all, he was the preacher who never preached.

"What are you doing these days?" She got him a soda from the machine, and they went back to her office.

"Oh, you really don't want to know." He shook his head, as if it was best he kept it a secret.

"But I do." She couldn't help to stare. He was still as charming as she remembered. Maybe even too good looking for his own good. She remembered her mother saying that.

Of course, they'd never actually dated, yet she remembered taking long walks with him in other countries on hot afternoons.

He knew what she looked like without makeup. He was soft spoken and he was good with his hands..as she recalled.

"I'm at a youth home. Probably, doing something I shouldn't be doing, but there is this kid. He's not there anymore, but we still keep in touch. He's in college, and well, he just needed my support. I guess. He's having dinner with his sister at the moment, and her family." He told her, as he sat there in her little office.

"Oh." Now she felt a little out of it. "I would invite you..."

"But?"

"Well, I have to pick up.." She didn't know how to explain it. "I'm kind of babysitting, at the moment."

"Oh."

"But..you know...if you like, maybe we could stop somewhere, if you don't mind eating with a toddler." She shrugged.

"Not at all." He smiled, as if he was glad this wasn't the end of anything.

#LoveWins

Ruben was ecstatic when he heard the news from the Supreme Court. Finally, gay marriage was legal in every state. So he nor Dorian didn't wait. They got in line for their marriage license. Naturally, they made it a family affair and Abel brought along Angie who had to call Sawyer.

They met Eli and his new boyfriend Landon in line, too. There was Eli's little sister with her girlfriend, there for support. It was a time for happiness. So many smiling faces. Some very old. some who were sons and daughters. Ruben couldn't imagine two old men waiting all these years to marry, but it was 50 years in the making. It made him smile more as he held Dorian's hand. This was the day. The first day of the rest of his life. He was truly a family man now with his partner.

    1. I felt I had to make a collage about the monumental moment. And this debate has been part of many of my characters' storylines. Unable to marry and not be acknowledge as a family in one state yet accepted in another. And how it can split lives apart..where you'll work, and raising a family.
