on the verge of something

Vada and the terrible summer

Vada couldn't even be sure they actually made eye-contact. How could the two of them, actually have shared the same womb? Had she disliked having a brother so much that she'd put him out of her mind?

She shook the thought that she was the terrible one. No, it was none of her fault.

Her parents were strange. Especially, what she remembered of her Dad. She hoped Frankie didn't ask about him.

Now she wondered which grandparents raised him. Her mother's parents? Her father's? She hated to ask, but it felt important.

She didn't feel like talking about it with Alo. She promised not to shut him out. At least Frankie would be around a day or so.

As it was, Frankie was in college. He was suppose to be on his own, but he felt connected to Rhys, somehow and had stayed at the home a little longer, but she guessed they were looking for him to move on.

She didn't know if she should be worried or not. Evidently, he did work. Even if it was at a fast food place.

Of course, she felt like the idiot. She was a year older and still behind in school. How was she the normal one?

Her cellphone rang. It wasn't Alo. It was Josie wanting facetime and Vada was suppose to be getting ready to go out with her parents and Frankie for dinner.

"Oh My God! I can't believe this is happening!" Josie's smile was so big. "Henry just told me. How are you handling it?"

"Well..I guess..OK. Frankie's..he's very quiet. I..I hope he warms up to me." Vada sighed. "You really didn't have to call, I bet its late there. How's the trip?"

"I dunno, I guess..just too much access baggage." Now Josie was straight lipped as she looked into the phone.

"Access baggage?" Vada winced. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm just being a bitch..I guess." She sounded quite sad.

"Oh, Josie, you couldn't be homesick. I mean, what's there to miss?" Vada tried to cheer her up, but in the next breath. "You know, we're thinking about you. And hope you have some fun."

"I know...but.." and then she practically babbled. "I think I'm pregnant."

"Oh...OH.." Vada's eyes lit. "But..but you don't know for sure?"

"I'm not sure I want to know." She was in a pout.

"Of course, you want to know." Vada stared at her. "You have too."

"I dunno." She pulled a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Why? Why is this happening now?"

"This have to do with Sky?" Vada said out loud, thinking she should have kept that question to herself.

"NO. No..it has nothing to do with him." She sniffed, but winced more tears. "Now..I've made Henry..so mad.."

"What?" Vada looked into her phone. "What does he have to..." Vada pressed her lips tight. "Does he know?" It was easy to figure the math. But it was just one time. Wasn't it? Vada took a deep breath. "Look, stop stressing. It'll be OK. We'll figure this out. All right?"

But Josie wasn't saying much.

"Look, you two need to talk. He isn't mad at you, you know. He could never be mad at you." Now she felt as if she was rambling, wishing she could just hand over her phone to Henry, right this second, but of course, her mother was calling her for dinner. They were picking up Henry from the library. "Look, you'll be OK. It'll be OK." She couldn't think of anything else to say.

  1. Josie is definitely in a tough spot right now - especially being overseas and all.
