fleeting moments that linger

for a fleeting moment

Essie couldn't tell you what day of the week it was. Little alone, the date of the month. She wasn't even sure what year it was. She'd lost touch, being with baby Katie, every minute of the day.

"I wish you'd told me." She looked up at Taylor, who was offering her a hand with the infant, but she barely noticed. Finally, he took the little thing from her tired arms. "I mean, Vada didn't even come and see me." She was suddenly distraught. Vada knew she had a brother. "What in the world does she think of me, now?"

"She didn't get weird." He told her with a dead stare. "Besides, she just found out she has a twin brother."

"A twin brother?" Essie winced, thinking she should be there for Vada, but then again, she hadn't really been there for her friends in an awful long time.

"Remember, that gift bag I brought you, it was from her." Taylor reminded her. He held the baby in his arms and all was quiet. Not even a whimper from Katie.

"Oh..oh.." She'd forgot all about that. She looked at the clock, it was three in the afternoon and she was ready to sink into a deep sleep. Would she ever be the same, again? After all, it was Scott and Taylor who fended for themselves in the kitchen.

Naturally, no one had been over with food. No one from the church. Definitely, not her parents. Although, Scott usually brought home something from work. Charlie would load him up with something from the deli, like pulled pork or a few baked chicken breasts, mashed potatoes and gravey.

"Still no luck, on the job hunt?" She hated to bring it up, but it would help if Taylor found a job.

"Not yet, I'm working on it." He told her somebody from the library had helped him with his resume and found a helpful website. "This girl, Mae, said I could volunteer at the library. She said it would look good on my resume. Who knows, maybe I could get a job at the library."

Essie sighed. She'd never ever thought of Taylor as a librarian. She could see that deer in the headlights look of his, if someone even asked him for help. This was the guy who'd spent summer's roofing. He liked the hard labor stuff.

Essie winced, as she watched him with the baby. He went to change her little pamper. She guessed it was his Dad who liked him to do all the hard labor. After all, Taylor hadn't spoken to him in the last few years.

  1. It's pretty tough being a new mom... you really do lose track of time... I hope Essie gets some time for herself soon ...
