Somebody I used to know

Gabby still had some time before classes started at the Uni. Still, she wanted to be on her own on campus to take in how her daily routine would be once the semester started.

Naturally, it was the bookstore that caught her eye, giving her ideas about shopping for birthdays and the holidays. She knew she'd have to bring more money. Perhaps, even get a job. While she was there, full of smiles of all the little things that would be perfect for friends or even Ste, she noticed someone with hats.

Suddenly, she found herself backed in a corner when she turned to see who he was. It was Cody. First, she thought, he hadn't aged a bit. How could that happen? It had been years. It felt like decades now, but she remembered she was fourteen then, and she'd been impressed with his coolness. He was always a man of mystery to her, and yet he'd been a friend indeed, while she imagined she was one in need.

He'd been a good listener, but a drifter of sorts back then. She never did even know his last name, nor where he called home. But she'd known him in school in a different town. She couldn't imagine why he was here. She was certain he wasn't the continuing education sort, but he looked right at home. He worked at the bookstore.

"Oh." He said and then smiled at her. "What are you doing here?"

She told him she was a freshman at the Uni.

"Are you on campus?" He wanted to know.

"I still live at home." She nodded. He nodded back. Before she knew it, he was buying her iced coffee at the Campus coffee shop.

As always, he let her do all the talking, but she did find out he was a part-time student and he lived in a boarding house nearby.

"I know where that is." She knew of some who had lived there at one time.

"Well, come by and see me, some time," Cody said.

A laugh got caught deep in Gabby's throat. She doubted that happened.
