Who's gonna catch you when you're so far away

Misty believed in technology. Of course, she had to go on that date with Slater or her uncle would hound her until it happened.

"Oh, I'm just here to keep you company," his smile might have been endearing, but she didn't trust him. "You have to eat."

Naturally, she was practically vegan and he wanted to go out for steak. They settled on the Noodle shop.

Actually, the whole date felt like a staredown. She was much better at communicating on her phone.

"Besides, I have someone on this dating app," she said it might turn into something.

"Good," he nodded with a smile as if he was fine with that. "I hope it goes well."

"Why wouldn't it?" She snapped.

"Of course, it will go well," he nodded with almost a wink and a smile. "But you can always call me if you want to talk."

She wanted to roll her eyes at him. Never again would they go out. He was definitely not her type. After all, he was just a good-for-nothing punk who probably never finished high school.

Bishop was her type. He was educated and vegan. Possibly, he liked to stay indoors more than most people, but he was so brainy. Always doing research at the Geology department on campus. Of course, he never had time to take her anywhere.

"If you need to go somewhere, let me know." Slater leaned forward that night with a quick smile. He used to be a truck driver.

Misty wanted things to turn out right for her. She really wanted to date Bishop, but he never had time for her. Yet, he could text all night. Why was he up at three in the morning? He could ruin her day that way. Naturally, she responded, hoping they might get a chance to actually see each other, face to face.

All her friends ended up with people they met on the dating app. Why couldn't she? Before she knew it she was pouring her heart out to Slater about her situation.

Slater told her, "Why not try a different guy on the app. Or maybe a whole new dating app?"

She bugged him about taking the questionnaire on the app.

"I don't like tests," he shrugged. "I was never a good test taker. It's amazing I passed a test so I could get my truck-driving license."

He was hopeless, she thought and he told her not to worry over him. He thought his dating days were over but he was younger than her. Misty was thirty-two.

Slater started to show up at the office with a treat from the bakery and sometimes, bring her soup because he didn't think she was eating. This was a bit annoying in the beginning, but it didn't take her long to get used to his ways. While she got nothing from Bishop.

"You hang in there, it's bound to happen," Slater kept smiling as if to cheer her on. When he would get a smile out of her, he'd tell her she had a nice one.

But the last thing she ever expected, Slater moved into her building.

  9. Slater and Bishop are so different. I can why Misty's attracted to Bishop -- they seem to have more in common. And maybe his unavailability is part of the appeal! Then again, never underestimate a dude who brings you food . . .
