it couldn't be like that

"I had no idea that Ben's house was so nice," Ellie didn't know where to start when Rex sat down next to her. "I wish I could stay here. Central air. Nice."

"I want you to give me another chance," Rex was back to the same old line.

"Can't. Sorry." She shook her head, no. "Just admit it. It was a mistake."

"No, it wasn't."

"Yes, it was." Ellie sighed. "Look, I think you're just trying to hold on to the past. It might not even have anything to do with me, you know. You gotta stop it. You've got everything to look forward too. College. Higher learning, Fraternities. Sororities. You're so lucky. But then you want me, which is crazy. Insane. And I know you're not like that, Rex. You're not. You're not a bad person or anything. You just gotta let go. Let go of whatever it is that keeps you from moving forward." Had she said too much?

"OK, but you won't hate me, will you?"

"No, I don't hate you," Ellie tried to smile. "Promise."

It was quiet for awhile.

"I'm serious about going to UT," he then said.

"Really?" Ellie smiled. "Maybe it wasn't a wasted trip, after all."

"I guess," Rex still sounded sad. "You said it was mistake."

Ellie squinted her eyes shut.

"Yes," she said. "Absolutely." She bit her bottom lip. "I just- Believe me, I'll never do anything that crazy with anyone, again. It was sort of a whim, you know. I felt I needed you, but I didn't. I really didn't. Really, I didn't even feel like myself at all then. And it wasn't you, it was me. It was me." She hated to swallow her words thinking of the past wondering about her future with Eric.

"There's someone else?"

"Yeah," Ellie took a deep breath. "And he knows everything. He knows." She couldn't help but smile. "And he still wants to be my boyfriend." She felt like melting into tears but she didn't. "The next time I see you, you'll probably be introducing me to your college girlfriend."

"I don't know if I can see you again." His words were low, and she felt the flem in her throat rising.

"OK." She whispered with a nod. It was time for him to go. No hug. Nothing. There was no other way.
