little jitters

Naturally, Amanda showed up at the women's clinic alone. She knew Dan wouldn't show. He said he'd be there, but that was like everything else he said lately. It was just some white lie after another to keep everyone shut up. Even Dylan.

It was frustrating. He had the insurance card. Hopefully, it was all in the system. It should be, but Amanda knew with her luck that she'd need it, and he probably wouldn't even know where it was.

She sat in the waiting room looking at various pictures of children. All those happy faces. Babies like flowers. Amanda tried to smile. Hopefully, her mom got it. She smiled like she did. It got to Amanda emotionally thinking of her in the hospital bed. When was she ever going to get better?

Amanda's lips burned. They were so chapped. She'd forgot to put on makeup this morning. She felt horrible. It didn't really matter. She supposed. All the questions to face. Where was the father?

Maybe it was a good thing Dan didn't show up. He might get the third degree. What if they thought he was the father? Amanda grimaced at that. God, that was a far out thought. What was going on in her head?

She should have asked Kyle to come but that would have been an act of congress to get him out of school. What good would it do if he were here? She could just see the nurse staring at the other, breathing under her breath, "Yeah, I just bet he's the one, not."

She would be seventeen next month. Was this going to be against the law? Her having a fifteen year old's baby. It never bothered her until now. Amanda looked up then. There was Kyle coming through the entrance.

"What are you doing here?" She snapped.

"Where's Dan?" He was out of breath.

"I dunno. He's not answering his cell." She looked at him with his open flannel shirt and a long sleeve gray thermal underneath. "How did you get here? You didn't ride your bike, did you?"

"No, I caught a bus," Kyle sat down next to her. "I ditched first class and came."

The nurse called her name then and he took her hand.

  1. I really don't envy Amanda her brothers.
I think it's so frustrating at hospitals and such, you always need all of your stupid cards, and then you need your passport to verify that it is really you and blah blah blah. I hate bureaucracy.
I hope Amanda's mum will get better. Occasionally, I caught myself thinking of her mum more like of a grandmother, because she's so helpless and frail in her hospital bed...
Where was the father is really bound to be an awkward question. But I'm sure Kyle WOULD have come with her if she'd asked him. --- When I read that Kyle was coming I smiled. He's great.
I had to smile at the thought of them thinking Dan was the father :)
    But I don't think it's against the law, isn't it? They're both under-age, aren't they?
