Olivia was happy she'd survived her own prom. No real diseaster. True, she didn't know Steve felt so about her.
"You knew he was in love with you." Eric had left it as a question.
"I just don't see it." And she hadn't. She thought of him as a friend. Nothing more. "Well, I don't like him, that way." She was perfectly honest about it.
"But can he distinguish something like that?"
They laid in the back of Eric car that night thinking on it. Of course, they'd made out too and forgot about the trouble with Steve, as well.
Now, there was Eric's prom to think about.
"I'm sure we'll get through that, too." They'd taken a picnic down the trail close to her house a few days before Eric's the prom.
"Of course." He'd nodded, helping set up the old quilt and all the good things he'd brought from the deli where he worked. "I really want you to enjoy it. I've asked all my friends to be on their best behavior. I promise it'll be nothing like the Steve incident."
"But it wasn't that bad. All he wanted was a dance, you know." She dug through the basket then lining up bowls of salads and a bag of fried chicken. It smelled so wonderful, and it made her happy they could spend this moment together in the warm sunshine, even if on the ground it was rather cold.
He got out the iced sodas and handed one to her.
They gave a toast then to Proms. May they never be life changing.
