such wonderful things

Ellie hadn't had a class with Heather since her Freshman year. There was a time when she imagined they might be best friends, but then Heather was the one with the big boobs and the curves and somehow mistakenly forgot their trip to the zoo and ended up with some guy she met on the Internet. They hadn't been friends since.

But here Heather was and Ellie was ringing her up at the craft store where Ellie worked.

"Oh, I can not wait for Prom. I am so ready." Then she got started about Theo, her one true love who was going in to the Marines. Evidently, not the Internet guy. It sounded like the makings of a perfect Harlequin romance. He had the limo planned.

"It'll be perfect."

Ellie tried to smile, but it was getting to her. She just wanted to tell her to shut up, but she couldn't. After all, it was Heather's prom and she was in love and this was the guy she was destined to marry.

"How about you?"

For a moment, Ellie felt like telling her an elaborate story, but she didn't. She noticed Elliot was watching her.

"I'm not really up for it, right now." She nodded. "I have to go out of town."

"That's terrible." Heather looked as if Ellie was missing out.

"Its OK."

"You don't have a boyfriend?" Heather made it sound that it had to be just as bad as having a brain tumor.

"No." Ellie shook her head.

"I thought you were seeing someone?" Heather was holding up the line.

"We broke up." Ellie found herself saying. "But its OK. I'm just fine."

"Oh, man," Heather sounded as if she'd give her a treat of some kind.

"Really, its OK." Ellie faked a smile. "Good to see you." But it wasn't. She hated this time of year more. At least Heather made Ellie feel Prom was just a lame excuse to conjure up what romance was suppose to be. What did Heather really know about such stuff?

Ellie bit at her bottom lip then, hoping no one saw just how she really felt about her problem with her mystery man, Elliot.

  3. Ellie hasn't actually broken up with Elliot. He's decided he doesn't want anyone know they're going out since he's so much older than her. Especially, at work.
