he had a job to do

But then it turned around
And he began to change
She didn't wonder then
She didn't think it strange
But then he got a call
He had to leave that night
He couldn't say too much
But it would be alright
He didn't need to pack

Nick couldn't believe he'd actually do it. Why? Why would he? He kept finding Heath's phone number. He'd take a long look at it, think he'd thrown it away, but he hadn't.

Actually, he hadn't spoken to anyone. He couldn't even look at himself in the mirror. He didn't want to see his bruised face. He wanted it to stop. This dread inside.

He felt outside himself. That he wasn't quite who he used to be. Maybe he just didn't know, anymore. But he'd felt that way for a long time. Long before Kelsey. It was as if she'd somehow made him normal, again. Or at least for a little while. He wasn't that guy who everyone knew who was brought up for that rape charge. Of course, no one ever talked about it. Lot of people blamed it on Leia. Still it was a label. A label that made him cringe. He didn't want to be that person. He wasn't that person.

Several times he'd put together concoctions that he was pretty sure would put him out of his misery. For good. As of yet the mixes of over the counter drugs were just in medicine bottles waiting to be taken. Sometimes, he'd just take a little. See if he could take the edge off. Sometimes, it worked. Sometimes, it just made him more sad.

Had he taken anything when he decided to call Heath? He must have. He just forgot.

"Well, come out for coffee, why don't you?" Heath would snap him out of it. He was sure of it. Heath sounded as if he had a cure.

"OK."

But when Nick saw Heath at the nearby Starbucks, he could see the look on Heath's face. Heath was mortified.

"Pardon me, but you look like shit." Heath scowled. Of course, Heath looked better than ever. He'd changed his look from plain emo to blond goth. Nick barely recognized him.

"Really?" Nick decided he wouldn't be ashamed of the almost broken nose. "I feel fine." Only he was on auto-pilot and felt as if he were in a padded space ship of some sort ready to visit other planets.

"You were so pretty," Heath told him. "Scared shitless in fact, what changed your mind?"

Heath sat there waiting to light a cigarette as if he was waiting for his moment of stardom. Perhaps to be found in Starbucks to be the next IT guy.

"The timing was all wrong." Nick shrugged as if he were in someone else's skin, yet he was so numb yet warm as if he felt good about this. Being here with Heath.

"Yes, timing is everything, I suppose." Heath grinned. "But what ever caused the fight? What had you been doing with your room-mate's girl?"

"Nothing." Nick blinked as if he could hardly hear himself think. If he got the answers right he might be on the brink of something wonderful. Had he said the right thing?
They drank up the expensive brews of coffee. Heath told him he was in his last year at the university. He talked about going to New York to be on Broadway.

"Well, then, why don't we get out of here." Heath almost winked. Enough said. Evidently.
