reconnected

Lon did try to call Sarah's mother but he got a recording that the phone had been disconnected. Naturally, it made him sick to his stomach that he might never hear anything about Charlie ever again.

He kept busy with his truck. It kept his mind off things. He kept quiet about what was going through his mind. How he was wondering how old Charlie was. Was he seven months old yet? Maybe he was eight. Possibly not that far along. He hated this lost feeling. He wasn't suppose to be feeling this way, but he'd been there when he was born, and it felt so right when he held him.

It wasn't like he could ask Ellie if she wanted to have a kid. This wasn't about that. It was this feeling that something just wasn't quite right with Charlie, but he didn't know what to do about it. This was not something he could bring up with his Dad because he'd tell Lon how lucky he was that that kid wasn't his, and he should stop worrying. He knew it would make himself, as well as his dad, mad if they talked. So he didn't call home.

He just kept taking things apart on the truck. This had to get fixed. He wanted the engine to run smooth. He knew he needed his own vehicle. Lon kept looking for things to do on the truck. He'd forgotten supper. It was way into the night.

His cell buzzed about ten thirty or so. He couldn't imagine who was calling. And then he heard Sarah's mother on the line.

"I've been trying to get a hold of you for days," he couldn't believe she was calling.

"I was afraid I wouldn't ever find you," she said and then she told him about Sarah. "Some one called me about the baby."

Lon felt as if a ton of bricks had hit him. "Is Charlie all right?"

"Yeah, she left him with this friend of hers and never came back for him." Her mother sighed.

"Do you know where she is?" Lon couldn't help her about that. "I haven't seen her since-"

"I know." Her mother said. "Do you still want him?"

"Want him?" Lon almost dropped a wrench on sneaker then.

"Your name is still on the birth certificate."

"I could have him?" Lon squinted.

"I-I can't handle a baby right now. I'm in chemo."

"I'm sorry-" Lon blinked, imaging what it would be like to have Charlie.

"It's all right. I'm just waiting for the worst. If you'll meet me in Lawton, Oklahoma, I'll give him to you." She told him.

"Are you sure its all right? Are you sure Sarah would want that?" Lon was uncertain.

"She's pretty much abandoned him, don't you think?"

"I dunno..." Lon had to think. He looked to see the light on at the kitchen. Ellie was washing dishes. He wondered what she'd think, Yeah, it sounds like it." He found himself saying as if he were on auto-pilot. He could do this. He knew it in his heart.

"I've tried to get a hold of her. She won't return my calls. I told her what I was going to do." Her mother told him.

"OK." Lon cleared his throat. He listened then where he needed to meet her.
