taking the time

Heath wasn't sure what to make of Kelsey.

As it was the car battery was dead. No one had started Kyle's car. So while Nick jump started the car, Heath was left to entertain Kelsey.

"So how do you know Nick?" Kelsey studied him there in the kitchen while Heath made an effort to clean up. He offered her a cupcake, but she wouldn't take one. She looked at them as if they might be something naughty.

"You know," Heath shrugged. "How it is, a friend of a friend ,or something like that." He smiled.

She just nodded.

"So is he seeing anyone?" She was serious as if she needed to know.

"I dunno for sure. Seems like there might be someone." Heath bit his bottom lip to keep from smiling. He felt he was suddenly a compulsive liar. He hadn't meant to be, but thought it was best on both counts.

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"God, he's been so, I dunno. It takes him forever to get out there and meet people." Kelsey sighed. "How well do you know him?"

"Oh, just a little," Heath shrugged hoping he wasn't giving to much away.

"Would you mind, you know, watching out for him." She looked as if she'd pay him if she must.

"Of course, I'll watch out for him." Heath smiled.

"I hope he's not upset, seeing me with Kyle." She looked at one of the cup cakes then and took an M&M off of it to eat.

"Upset?" Heath winced.

"We used to date."

"Oh." Something was caught in Heath's throat then. He coughed slightly.

Thankfully, Kyle honked the horn then. She had to go.

Heath went to the livingroom when Nick walked in and closed the door behind him. He breathed a big sigh of relief.

"Thank God, that's over with," Nick said leaning against the front door. "You didn't tell her anything about us, did you?" Nick looked concerned then.

"No," Heath said. "You think I'd do something like that?"

"Of course not," Nick said, shaking his head. "Its just she has this way about of getting stuff out of you, you know."

"You think she'd take it badly?" Heath scowled.

"I really dunno. Maybe she'd be OK with it. I guess, I'm just worried what my parents would think. Actually."

"Yeah, you want them to be the last to know." Heath nodded. "They can really go kind of crazy."

  4. I just sense the suspense..Nick being outed. Perhaps she cares about him, still.
