tell me about it

Before Heath had a chance to get a good look at Rex, who amazingly looked like he could actually be Nick's big brother, Nick had whisked them away for a drive.

"Where we are we going?" Heath looked at him a little lost.

"Anywhere, but here. I can't stand him." Nick gritted.

"But he didn't say anything?" Heath squinted as he held on to his door as they hung a corner street in Nick's pick up. "Just slow down, you'll be all right. Its gonna be fine."

But he could see the look on Nick's face that he couldn't remain calm. Finally, at the library, he transformed into the library super hero, Heath imagined. Everyone was so glad to see him even if they were in the last 15 minutes to closing. All the middle aged women who worked there had to give him a hug. They really had missed him.

"But we have Misty now," one of the clerks said as they motioned for this lean girl to come over. She was from Nigeria and attended the nearby university. She flashed him a smile, and Heath watched Nick help her lock up. He showed her how to lock the tricky door. She smiled about that. Finally, the library closed up, and they were left in the September air of the late evening. Just a tiny chill, but it was one that made you want to be closer. Heath almost put his arm around Nick, but remembered not too.

"I can see why you miss them," Heath grinned. "Wish I had a job where they counted on me like that."

"Yeah, well, maybe you will," Nick looked at him. "They liked your interview, and they want you, you know?"

"Well, I want it, but then I don't. I dunno. We'll see."

They got back in Nick's truck then and drove around a bit more. Nick showed him the high school.

"I want to tell them." Nick said as they were going down High School Drive away from the school.

"What? Are you kidding, me?" Heath winced, he shook his head, no. "I'd just wait. You know, wait til your 42 or something. Just, you shouldn't."

"I don't like this. I want them to know." Nick nodded.

"Well, lets wait til after the steaks. After tonight. Call them on the drive home. Leave them a voice mail. Anything, but being face to face. Believe me, you don't want to see their faces. You don't. You just don't." Heath shook his head. It was an ugly memory he didn't want to think about. He knew he'd let them down and how angry his Dad got. His Mom had to be on his Dad's side. She'd never done that before. And it hurt even worse that he'd never been able to talk to her since. They'd been so close. That was years ago.

Nick kept his eye on the road.

"I told Kyle we'd go to a movie with him and Kelsey, and then we'll meet up with Roger and Olivia at IHOP." Nick said right before they got back to his house.

"Are you going to tell Kyle?" Heath looked at him.

Nick just shrugged. It was best to get back to almost friends mode.
