unsettling

How could he explain this to her? Lon could see now they were going to have a major rift of some kind over Charlie and Lonnie.

"I'm sorry," Lon said on the drive home. "I know what you're thinking. Charlie is Lonnie's. He should be with him. And you're right. He should. Its just, not a good idea to have my Dad in this. Its just not." He wanted to know what she was thinking, but he had to keep an eye on the road.

He knew she wasn't smiling about this.

"Look, things were really crappy for me growing up. A lot of times, I didn't think, either of my parents wanted me. Especially, my Dad. It was like I was something that was just-just going take everything he had away from him. And then this happens. Its like he was determined not to have anything to do with Charlie. He didn't have too. You know, I wasn't asking for the ranch or anything. I wanted Charlie to be wanted. I always wanted Charlie from the moment I knew she was going to have him."

"You can't keep him from Lonnie." Ellie winced.

"I know." Lon nodded. "Just can't we get settled first. You know. At home. I don't know if this is a good time. I'll have my Dad furious." Lon sighed and looked at Ellie. "Just call Lonnie. Call him right now and tell him whats going on."

"Me?" She squinted hard.

"He'd rather hear it from you than from me." Lon was in the middle of Kansas. He wondered if he'd have to turn around and drive to Texas now.
