this modern love

What are you holding out for?
What's always in the way?
Why so damn absent-minded?
Why so scared of romance?

This modern love breaks me

"You won't press charges, will you?" Elliot held Evan as if he'd missed him. Eric wondered if it were true. If he had?

"I should." Eric nodded as if nothing had changed. So what if Amanda was in some rehab of sorts. Did she need drugs just to be around Evan? Then what? He couldn't trust her.

"She really thinks its best that you have Evan." Elliot assured him.

"OK." At least that was settled. There had been some talk with his Dad about getting a house. Of course, it had fallen in his mother's lap. She'd have to co-sign. His dad didn't have the clout. Oddly, his dad had moved back in with his Mom. Strange, how one little baby could change so many lives, and he was sleeping so sweetly at the moment in Elliot's arms.

Syd looped her arm around Eric's.

"He's grown so much." Elliot smiled as he delicately rubbed Evan's cheek.

"We could give you some pictures." Syd told him.

"Thanks. I'll be sure to show them to Amanda." Elliot tried to smile, a little, but he kept watching Evan, instead.

Eric looked at Syd as if she'd somehow have to keep him from lashing out about Amanda. He wanted to understand it. He did, but somehow it came back to him that she blamed him for everything.

Eric felt as if the wind had been knocked out of him, but he kept on going. Somehow, he felt stronger. It was good not to be his depressed self, anymore. And yet, it still felt so uncertain. The future. Yet another day went by, and it was better than the day before. Everything seemed more worth while with Evan in his life.
