to each his own

"This is just crazy shit, you know that." Roger wasn't even sure why he was here. Guess, he had nothing better to do. And the fact that Amber called out of the blue and told him he should be there for Kyle.

He knew Kyle was shaking. Nerves, he supposed as he sat next to Kyle.

"OK, so you called Amber and she talked to Nick and- wait. Did he call his brother?" Roger winced.

"I think so. Its his kid, you know." Kyle looked back at him, holding a styrofoam cup of horrid coffee.

"I hope you're not drinking that." Roger took it from him and tossed it in the trash. He sat back down and looked at Kyle who looked really out of it. "You gonna go to Utah again this summer and work on a production at that university, like you did last year?"

Kyle shook his head, no. "I gotta stay close to home. Rosie didn't like it when I was gone last year." Kyle said about his little girl.

"Good." Roger nodded not wanting to think of Kelsey and her troubles. He'd rather look at pictures of Rosie on Kyle's cell phone.

"What about you?" Kyle looked at Roger.

"I'll be doing my usual." He tried to act all cutesy, but it just wasn't the time for it. "Oh. Oh." Roger's eyes lit. "I do know something. But, if I tell you, you can't tell and you'll have to act surprised when you hear it."

"OK." Kyle sighed as he sat there in the waiting room. He yawned really big then as if he could go to sleep on the couch if given half the chance.

"Ellie's gonna have a baby." Roger sounded sure of it.

"You're really sure about that?"

"Of course, I am." Roger winced. "Aren't you excited about that?"

"Yeah." But Kyle's voice was dull. And Roger noticed there were tears in Kyle's eyes.

"You can't be mad about that, are you? I mean, she's married. Remember?" Roger gave Kyle a pat on the back. Hadn't they all been in love with Ellie, one time or another, Roger grinned.

"Its great. I'm happy for them." Kyle nodded.

"OK." Roger nodded. "What's wrong?"

"Just something I have to do." Kyle didn't even protest the tears.

"Like what?" Roger didn't understand.

"Break up with Amber." He whispered.

Roger felt teary-eyed too. He knew Kyle was doing it, because he had to let her go. She was graduating and she'd be off to college out of state.

Of course, Roger's throat was parched. He thought of Doyle and wondered why did he ever let himself fall for him, anyway. No way it could work out. Maybe it was best to stay out of this game. There always seemed some catch to it. Just then his cell vibrated. It was Doyle.

Roger bit his bottom lip. He wondered what this might be about.
