moving on

Syd got a temp job at the dentist office. It was only morning and basically answering phones and making appointments. Naturally, she had Eric's Mom to thank for that. She was sure she would have never gotten something that good on her own. It felt nice to contribute for a change.

"What are you talking about, you do more than you should, already." Eric looked at her as if she didn't have to do this. "I never wanted you to have to feel this obligated. I mean, you do so much for Evan, already. You're pregnant." He bit his upper lip as if she was over doing it.

"No, no, seriously, this is really good for me." She thought so. She still wanted to get the transcribing classes done. It might come in handy. She could work from home.

"OK." Eric nodded as he went to get her favorite tea as he did every morning before he left to drive a bus for handicapped kids. Then he had a summer class and was home by noon. They always had the afternoons together.

"It works out great. We still have time to see each other. And this way, Evan can get used to daycare, too." Eric did get a bit of a discount there since he was a student at the University.

She liked the job, and everyone liked her too. She'd never actually felt that way about a job before. Generally, there was always a catch to it. But she hadn't found it yet. Possibly it was because it was just a temp job, and they were desperate to have someone.

It was as if everything kept moving forward. Her tummy was growing. The baby was kicking. And she felt the need to find out if Kip was still where he was supposed to be.

She knew if she'd told Eric, it might mean trouble. But she called Kip's work to find out if he was still there. He was.

"Well, that's great," she knew the secretary there.

"You know, he got married, don't you?" The secretary said.

"Really?" She couldn't believe it. Who in their right mind would marry Kip? This was shocking. "He didn't tell me."

"Well, he doesn't talk about it much. But he's on vacation right now." The secretary left it at that.

So here she was keeping this from Eric about Kip. She just couldn't hold it in, much longer.

"I found out something." That's when she told him about Kip.

"Married?" Eric winced. "Are you serious? Who did he marry?"

"I dunno." Syd sipped her tea now. It was caffeine free but this whole thing about Kip gave her a jolt. "Probably someone overseas. You know, someone who hasn't a clue about him."

"Maybe he had a few lined up. You know,  maybe there was someone you didn't know about." Eric shrugged.

Syd just winced. She thought she knew him pretty well and what he was set on doing. Still she wondered what had gotten into him to get married, so suddenly.
