so it goes

Ellie supposed her mom had taken the news about her pregnancy better than she thought she would. Maybe.

Naturally, her mom was good at tricking her that way. Have her at a gathering of some sort, and she was the queen of the party. Always pleasant and adoring. Then later she'd let the bomb drop.

"I didn't think you would do this to me." Her mother was serious now. Of course, they were at her Mom's apartment.

"Mom, you're already a grandmother." Ellie winced. What was she upset about now?

"Well, your sister is one thing," she sighed as if she had no control over Lisa, "But you, you're my baby." She hugged herself then and she was full of tears.

"What is going on with you, Mom?" Ellie was beginning to wonder if it were hormonal or something.

"You're my baby. And my baby is having a baby!" She was treating her as if she hadn't even started elementary yet.

"Its OK. Its really OK." Ellie looked at her then.

"But-but, what if something goes wrong. What if - if -" Her mother shook her head as if she were so scared something might happen to her.

Now she was scaring Ellie. What was she talking about? Ellie and Lon had the same blood type. She was pretty sure there wasn't a chance they were siblings.

"Like what? Everything is normal." Ellie told her.

"I know. I just feel so alone, you know." She sat down then in her cozy little livingroom.

"And who's fault is that, Mom? Seriously?"

Her mom just hugged herself and looked away.

"Did I tell you, Lisa and Geo are coming next month." Her mom smiled then like she was an entirely different person.

"Great." It was the first Ellie had heard of it.

"Don't you want to see your sister?" Her mother looked at her blankly.

"Of course, I do." Ellie looked around her mother's little place. Really, it hit Ellie then that she couldn't go back. Not the way it was before her Mom and Dad got divorce. So long ago. Her folks had had their troubles though, long before the divorce. And her Dad had married Kyle's Mom. They were so happy. She'd never seen her Dad smile quite like that.

Of course, she wasn't sure if she'd ever see her mother's genuine smile, again. Maybe it always had been fake.
