taking a ride

It felt almost like summer, except for those snow drifts around. Actually, it felt good at 38 degrees. The sun was bright and there was Elliot's old LTD on the curb.

"Unbelievable." Asa sighed as he stared at the piece of junk. He felt he was at a stale mate here. Amanda's car was still leaking oil. Kyle had done what he could with it. Asa hadn't been here when Kyle came to take a look at her car. Not that he would have been any help.

A part of him with bitter. Elliot was being aloof. Asa still wasn't sure just how well he was doing. Of course, Elliot didn't ask about Amanda. He didn't ask about anything. Maybe he was just depressed like Amanda said, but Asa wanted her to be a little more demanding with him. She was trying her best to get on with her life without Elliot's help.

Asa got in the LTD. The key was in the glove compartment. He pushed it in and the car started right up. Asa grinned. His stripped hoodie zipped up, he was on a mission now.

"Hey, what are you doing?" It was Amanda who walked up to the car. Rosie was over at Kyle's house. It was the perfect time.

"Get in. Lets see how far we can make it in this old thing." He had to push the passenger door open because it would stick.

She hesitated, but finally got in and texted Derrick, she was going.

So off they rolled out into the street and out of the neighborhood to the main drag of town just off the interstate. It felt as if he might be coasting a ship. Soon enough they were on the outskirts where the car dealerships were. He rolled into the first one he could find.

Amanda  looked at him as if she hadn't a clue what he might do. Before he knew it, they were making a trade in on a Ford Focus. It was used, but just a few years old. It was mid-night blue and still smelled new.  He could see Amanda loved it. It was a really sweet car.

And then came the sit down time. Just how would they pay for it. The salesman kept referring to Asa as Elliot, and Asa didn't stop him.

"You know, we generally won't sale a car just to the husband," the salesman said, looking at Amanda. "We know who's in charge."

Amanda slightly smiled as she looked over at Asa, who looked back at her. He supposed he could be doing worse things.
