in the middle of the night

Amanda was at the dance when it happened. She overheard Ian tell the school cop that Amy had been angry with him, but he hadn't expected her to do anything like this.

Yeap, charges were being filed against Amy now. Amanda rode with Derrick in the ambulance even if he kept insisting he didn't think his nose was broke, but his nose was bleeding. And he didn't want there to be any charges against Amy.

"Just, be quiet, OK." She could tell he felt like an idiot, but she kept telling him to relax. The paramedics didn't want to have to fight him. He did look all sad. She assured him that Ian was going to meet them there.

This was the last thing she was expecting. She knew they were looking for chaperons. Even if she just wanted to focus on student teaching, she knew they expected her to be here too. It was going to be a long night. No matter what.

Asa was home with Rosie. She called him as soon as she could about what had happened to Derrick.

"Should we come to the emergency room?" Asa wanted to know.

"No. No. I could just catch a ride home with Ian. You, don't have too." Of course, there was the thought of her car in the school parking lot. One more thing to have to worry about. "Maybe this won't take long. I'll  call you when to pick us up."

She hated hospitals now. It would be a long wait. She could sense it. Yet, the doctor saw to him as soon as Derrick arrived at the emergency room. Now as she waited, she wished she'd just driven her car. Yes, she supposed she was the same old Amanda, who didn't know if she were going or coming.

But she was with her brother in the examining room where they were checking his vitals. Naturally, the older doctor asked Derrick if his girlfriend was mad at him. Derrick gave him a light laugh. Amanda didn't dare add anything to the conversation. She was staying out of it. Just then her cell rang. She was sure it was Asa, again. Only it wasn't. Elliot was calling her.

Amanda winced. She looked at the big clock, it was only ten p.m.

"What are you doing?" Elliot asked.

"Actually, I'm at the emergency room with Derrick?" She walked out in the hallway. It was strange talking to him. It was like, everything was right where it should be.

"What happened?" He wanted to know.

"Its kind of a long story." She sighed, realizing he didn't know about Ian and Derrick. She guessed she would have to fill him in.
