what to think

Syd hadn't seen Kip's baby yet. She got the impression that it wasn't his.

"Don't you want to know, for sure?" Syd looked at him and Gem sitting there on the couch. For two people who worked in an orphanage, they neither liked babies much. Gem wouldn't dare hold Ella. She'd sort of warmed up to Evan and Kip looked plain scared.

"I don't know if I care, anymore." He looked indifferent about the situation.

"He's so tiny and fragile." Gem shook her head.

"Didn't he come early?" Eric thought he knew.

"No, he came right on time. He weighed six pounds." Really, Syd thought Coleman was the perfect size. According to Munro, anyway. "Munro told me he weighed twelve pounds when he was born."

"I really don't believe that." Eric begged to differ. "Probably gained that much in his first two weeks. Munro will fatten that baby up."

"Would you stop joking?" Syd had a mind to jab Eric in the ribs. "If the kids didn't have the sniffles and ear infections, I'd be over there, right now." At this rate, it might be summer before she saw baby Coleman.

Eric bit into a cookie. Thankfully, he knew when he was in trouble. He turned to food to be quiet.

"What exactly, do you plan to do, Kip?" Syd put him on the spot. Gem then looked at him too.

"Nothing too soon." He sighed. "I guess, I'll move back here." He looked at Gem then, "But its sort of up to Gem. I guess."

"Me?" She looked at him as if she had no idea she was part of the equation.

"Well, whats the point of being here, if you aren't with me?" He looked at her.

Syd crossed her arms. It was just like Kip to depend on someone else for his happiness.

  8. How strange that they aren't keen on babies even though they work at an orphanage. I imagine seeing the babies is the worst thing at a place like that, so sad- but I guess they are much harder work than children.
