a change or two
"I think we're going out." Sam informed him.
"Well, I'm hoping you aren't getting your hopes up that you're gonna, get something ...in return." Elliot told him as he was trying his best to race out of his suit into something more comfortable.
"For your information," Sam said. "Rachel asked me."
Elliot looked at Sam then as if that was insane.
"So you just had to be nice to her?" He got into his sweat pants quick enough and pulled on his old sneakers.
"Well." Sam shrugged. "I don't know that much about her, other than she works at funeral home."
"Since when?" Elliot winced as if Sam had to be kidding.
"That's what she said." He looked in the fridge for something to drink. A light beer.
Elliot set in the livingroom recliner then, hugging himself. He didn't think that was true about Rachel. He got up to get his cell in the bedroom and dialed.
"Mom." He waited for her to tell him how she was glad he was out of that house, away from Amanda, but he didn't comment. "What's going on with Rachel?"
Now his mother was excited. He'd seen the light of day. He was going to take a chance with Rachel.
Elliot gave her a deep sigh.
"Does she work at the funeral home?" All this time he thought she was married to the church..or just waiting to get married.
"Her folks are kind of down on their luck. They have all the girls married off, but her, and, she's going to have a career, or something, I guess." His mother told him.
Elliot just stared at his empty bed. It was funny, it wasn't until this moment that he understood just how old fashioned his parents were. The way his mother spoke of Rachel, needing a husband. He couldn't help but smile. Well, maybe she didn't need one, but he wasn't going to tell his mother this. He supposed his mother meant well, but really he just didn't want to listen to her.
Hopefully, Sam knew what he was getting into Rachel. Elliot wasn't so sure he wanted to get to know her, but he just might have too, if Sam started seeing her.
