colliding

Elliot was minding his own business in the teacher's lounge. Finally, his coffee was just the way he wanted it. Half milk and half coffee. He was keeping away from the sugar. There was no Sam to tease him. At least, he hadn't pushed him harder into getting the run-down house by the river. Kyle had talked Sam out of it. But still, Sam was keeping his eye on a few things. Sam was certain they were going to move in together.

Elliot tried to take his mind off of this and just as he was taking a sip of his coffee, someone backed into him and sloshed coffee all over him. The police officer almost knocked him over.

"Oh, I'm sorry." She didn't sound like a police officer. But she was dressed in a suit, all buckled up as if she might go on patrol this instant. She grabbed napkins. "Did I burn you?" She was beyond startled sticking napkins all over him, nervously.

"No.no.." He drank his coffee hardly warm. He backed away and almost sat on the coffee pot as he stared at her. Now, that was hot. He jumped away. He did look a mess, but it didn't really bother him. He went to put his coffee down. The napkins in the trash too.

"This is my first time." She stuttered. She took a deep breath. "I'm really scared." She nodded. "Kids, you know. Its the kids." She put her finger over her mouth as if she had to be quiet about that. No one could know. She was part of the DARE program.

"I'm really sure, you'll be a great role model. You know, girls will think its great. You, being here." Elliot made light of it and went to see if he could borrow a cardigan on the coat rack. All there was was a gray one no one would claim. It smelled of OLD SPICE, but he took off his jacket and put on the sweater that practically swallowed him.

"Penelope." She said suddenly, reaching for a handshake. She had a firm grip and he couldn't help but look at her hand in his. He sighed and pulled his hand back. He almost grinned.

"Well, its nice you're here. It won't be that bad. Its a good school." He told her how the sixth graders were a piece of cake. He did his best to keep her calm. Then Sam showed up.

"Well, I gotta go. I'm sure Sam here can show you where to go." Elliot breathed easy then. He straighten his dark rimmed glasses and was on his way. Sam just winced at him. Elliot made an effort then to introduce him to Penelope. Elliot thought Penelope might need to meet someone like Sam.
