drifting back

Roxie wasn't sure how to react. Just what did Amanda want to know? She put a little extra conditioner on her fingertips. It was something made from carrots and supposedly perfect for redhead. It was organic. Roxie talked about the conditioner for a moment as if she might be a sale's rep. Her sister had ingrained in her to talk the talk of a hairstylist. Of course, Roxie wasn't going to ask Amanda for money. She gave her a couple of free samples. It would go to waste if she didn't, since she didn't know any redheads.

"Well, I'm sure it'll all work out." Roxie smiled as if she could be positive. She hoped no one knew she was really sad. But it was a sad fact. She was well hated. What could she say in her defense? She was troubled. Scared. She hated her life.

She wished she'd had more faith in Kyle. She looked back at the kids in the livingroom. They were giggling, sitting next to each other.

"You see," She finally said as if she needed to admit something too. She needed a friend. And maybe it was good that Amanda didn't know her then. When she was in high school..when all she knew to do was to find bad attention. Roxie was glad she was past that now, but she was sure that was all people would ever remember about her. "Jai is the best mistake I ever made." Roxie talked about Jai's father.

It had been a one night thing. She'd dated Jared a short while before. Then they broke up. He was seeing someone else. It was the last thing she thought would happen. Seriously, she never meant to hurt anyone. However, Jai's dad was there for her. But after Jai was born, she thought he'd be happier with someone else. And he was now. He'd gotten married. A cop in Chicago. He was a good man. He was good with Jai. And she'd moved here. Thinking it was time to let things work out for him and his wife. Alone. No distractions from her. They were expecting a baby, any day now.

Amanda nodded as if she understood.

"Look, Rosie, can sleep over all weekend, if that would help." Roxie suggested. She did want to be a friend. She really did.
