gathering fabric

Olivia watched quietly as her mother did surgery on Kayla's wedding dress. She guessed her mother knew what she was doing. Although, she almost gasped when she saw how her mother snipped the sleeves off and cut a great big part of the neck out.

"We could make pillows out these sleeves." Her mother smiled.

"You're kidding, aren't you?" Olivia came closer and picked up the big puffy sleeve on the floor.

"Why would I be kidding?" Her mother looked back at her. "Maybe it could be used for the ring barrier."

"I don't think they have one." Olivia winced. but she was trying to imagine the pillow. A cute cylinder one might be perfect. "I didn't know ... you ..you even knew anything about being a seamstress."

"Kind of a thing of the past. Its cheaper to just buy clothes. Or so I've been told. But I've always wanted to make clothes. Sort of infectious, I guess. It just drives me crazy, until I can see it. Done." She quickly made gathers and felt the lace over the shiny fabric to build a new neck line. The bodice would look as if it were strapless, yet not with the sheer lace.

Olivia smiled, thinking her mother knew exactly how to make the dress beautiful. She didn't want to distract her. This probably was not the time to tell her that her father was coming for a visit. But she was excited to see him, she hoped her mother would be too. Or was this one of those little things, she was going to have to keep from her mother and her sister?

  1. It's the calm before the storm. The arrival of her father is definitely not going to be a good thing. :/

  8. Those sorts of things are never little.

I do like the description of the mom remaking the dress. My grandmother did that for my second cousin when she got married.
