never quite what it used to be

"What were you thinking!" Lon couldn't imagine letting someone who was still a toddler on a pony with out any supervision. The Shetland pony had taken off in a swift gallop. According to Lonnie, Charlie hung on for an awful long time. He'd found Charlie in the creek bottom unconscious.

"I'm sorry." Lonnie squinted hard. "I thought he could handle it. He kept wanting to ride the pony."

Lon was in tears, the thought of Charlie laying limp in a rocky creek bottom made him cringe. Of course, it hadn't rained in months, so there was no threat of him drowning. He just couldn't think of letting a little tike like Charlie, on the loose with a pony that hadn't been ridden on for a good twenty years.  It was an old pony  the local vet gave Lonnie.

"Why would you do that?" Lon glared at Lonnie. Did this have to do with the past? The idea that he was raising Charlie, instead of Lonnie?

"I dunno. I didn't mean for anything bad to happen. I didn't." Lonnie was working for a veterinarian. Actually, Ellie's brother had a clinic. Lonnie was working to become an animal doctor. Evidently, he was better with animals than people.

Luckily, Charlie only had a broken arm, and he only wanted Lon. No one else. He looked tired, but very aware that LeeLee wasn't there. Where was Hannah?

At the moment, Lon was beginning to feel like Ellie. Home was not here, anymore for him. And he wasn't so sure if he trusted Lonnie, anymore. He wanted too, but Charlie came first. He always would.

  1. I'm glad Charlie is OK. But its amazing what some people will let little kids do.

  2. You'd think he'd know better. I do wonder how Lonnie (Lon's younger brother) feels about Charlie.
