one thing leads to another

Sam did like to be the life of the party. No denying it. But he felt a lot more, subdued. He couldn't believe people's gratitude. Even people he worked with, came to this thing. And they brought groceries. It was amazing that people would think to do that. He really wasn't sure he deserved it.

Then Rachel showed up, just like she said. He didn't know why he'd doubted her. Her smile was contagious. And he so wanted things to go as she liked. She wasn't like anyone he'd ever met.

Sam wanted to be her friend. That's what it should be. They were two different to be anything else. So he listened to her talk about her black lab. Who evidently was the love of her life, who coincidentally was named Sam, too.

"See, it must be a sign." There was just a little wiggle in her smile and Sam knew then that she did like him. Evidently.

"What do you know." It wasn't really a question, just something to say, agreeably.  Sam kept smiling not sure where to go with this. But she had their date planned.

Sam looked up to see Elliot with Penelope. Well, that sly dog, he though. He had no idea that Elliot would even think about asking her out. This was just wild, he thought. Wow. He had no idea the housewarming could be full, of this many surprises.
