a thin line

Ellie didn't know how she felt about Lonnie now. Charlie could have been...killed.

"What is wrong with you?" She couldn't help but be angry. "We could be suing you, right now!" She snapped. It was hard to imagine Lonnie being Charlie's real father.

"It was an accident." He sighed. At least he looked a little scared, yet he wouldn't really look at her now.

"That was no accident! You should have known he wasn't old enough to ride something like that! Especially, alone!" She shook her head, imagining that pony taking off with him.

"Well, he seemed to like it. Like you know, he might want to be a bronco rider, one day." Lonnie was trying to make light of it.

Ellie didn't find it funny. She swelled up in tears.

"We've done so much, to make him a part of our family, and..and you just want us to throw it all away..don't you?" She was so angry. "Don't you love him, at all?"

"Of course, I do." Lonnie looked sad then.

Ellie hoped it was true. She wasn't sure she ever wanted to see him, again. He was the last person she ever thought she'd feel this way about. But all she wanted to do was hold Charlie.

She went back to check on him in the pediatric ward. His face so bruised and his little cast on his arm made her feel all the more an emotional wreck. She pushed her fingers through his thick curls. She wanted to take him home so badly. Ellie couldn't wait to get home.
