a brand new day

Milo doubted he'd ever drive a car, again. The fact was he didn't want too. There were a lot of things he didn't want to do. He didn't even want to get up in the morning, but he could see his sister was suffering. And he'd gone to the library after Ian's coaxing.

Ian was good at taking him places, but he left for school. Last time it was just a bit of paperwork and a visit with the library secretary. Today was the real deal.

Right away Asa got him a library card. He wasn't in the system.

"So, you've never been here?" Asa offered to show him around. He didn't help with the wheel chair. Milo liked that about him. He talked to him as if they were at the same level, even though he had to look down at him, ever so often. "Maybe you like graphic novels." Asa showed him the new arrivals. "But you might like crime, we've got that too." He showed him where those books were located. Then he showed him where the computer lab was located, or if he had his own, their was free WI-fi.

"I don't guess I'd be really good at shelving books or anything." Milo mentioned. Honestly, he didn't know what he could do here.

"The volunteering?" Asa smiled. "We really need someone to work on the DVDs and CDs."

"Oh." He looked at the shelves where those were located. Still he couldn't see himself putting anything high on a shelf.

"I'll show you the machine. Its in the back. You'd have to share the room with the mending ladies, but they won't be in, until later." Asa told him. Soon he showed him where all the items were that needed some refurbishing. It was in a box Milo could reach. Next, Asa showed him the machine and how it worked with all the steps involved that were color coded.

"Hopefully, the noise won't bother your ears." Asa smiled as he showed him how to press the brushes in and out of the machine. Soon enough, Milo was working it, and Asa left him to it. "Here's a pager, in case you need me." It was old, but small. Milo took it, but was determined not to need Asa.

Honestly, it was good to be doing something on his own. It was good to stay focused on the present, and not thinking about what he should have done or could have done on the day he was in the car accident.

  1. I'm glad he's making an effort. Maybe he's stronger than he actually knows.
