in a manner of speaking

"Are you OK?" Lola took Ian's hand.

She could see he was trying to laugh it off, as easily as he could. But she saw the sadness in his face.

"Did you want to talk to him?" Lola question. Ian shook his head, no.

"Its just, he was so certain, he could never trust me." Ian winced. "Then it ends up this way."

"But you could be his friend, right?" Lola knew Ian was the loyal type.

"It just kind of makes my head hurt, at the moment." Ian shook his head. "I mean, he's been through so much. But he's kind of a butthead. Always has been. He's selfish.  Then its like, did I ever know him, at all."

"I know you wanted to say something. You did," Lola said. "You were going to tell him off, or something."

"But I didn't. You were here." He grinned. "I don't think he'd ever told me, if you weren't here, either."

"Well, I think he needs his friends back." Lola told him.

"You think?" His smile was for her. She knew. Suddenly, it felt like a connection that had been there for an awful long time. She was now accepting that fact. They were a couple. She couldn't deny that.
